Oh deer!
It's been a couple of months since I'd seen the doe in my back yard but tonight she returned and brought two fawns. They're so cute!

Who Knew?!!!
I had no idea just how wonderful my backyard could be. And to think it all started with a woman in my checklane with 20 jars (or so) of grape jelly! All I wanted to do was attract some Baltimore Orioles. I went to WalMart to try to find some kind of feeder I could put grape jelly in and while I was looking around I got the Bluebird House, a shepherd's hook, a hummingbird feeder and I spied lots of other things I wanted but better judgement took over and I left.
It's been so much fun watching these critters and I'm afraid my housework has suffered because of my new hobby. But it's great to have something to look forward to. Seems all I ever did before was go to work and then when I wasn't at work, I'd fret because I had to go back. My job stinks big-time so it's good to have something enjoyable to think about.
Earlier this evening I headed out to the kitchen for a glass of water. As I approached my fridge, something caught my eye just outside the kitchen window. It was the doe that had visited a week or so ago. I know it's the same doe because the tip of her left ear is missing.
She was no more than 12 feet from the house and she saw me immediately. She froze. I froze. We both just stood there looking at each other. After about a minute of this, I slowly ducked down so she couldn't see me anymore and 'crawled' out of the kitchen to go grab my camera, hoping she'd still be there when I returned.
She was and she was staring up at the bird feeder. She also started chewing on the small plants that are springing up from the seeds that have fallen to the ground under the feeder. I was able to capture some images of her as she explored the yard. At one point she discovered my new sunflower plants I had just transplanted this morning. I was hoping she wouldn't eat them but was too excited to really care too much.
Here she is checking out the seedlings under the feeder. I was practically hanging out the window but she didn't seem to care.

At one point my cat Gary came strolling through the yard. He didn't see the deer but the deer saw him. She started snorting and pawing the ground but still stuck around for a few more minutes. She's very pretty but seems rather thin. I might just have to get her some carrots.

Doe a deer
I've had so much fun these past couple weeks watching all the critters. It's almost like an African Safari in my own back yard! This beautiful creature came to visit at 6:00PM. I just happened to be looking out the window at the right time. She came to within 30 feet of the house but by the time I grabbed my camera, she had started moving off. If you look closely you can see that the tip of her left ear is missing.
